Santa Elena Canyon is one of the most famous sights in Big Bend. From the overlook, you’ll see the Rio Grande flowing through massive cliffs that rise hundreds of feet. It’s an unforgettable photo stop that shows just how powerful the river is and it’s also the border between the U.S. and Mexico.
Tuff Canyon is one of the easiest places to see Big Bend’s volcanic history. From the overlook, you can look straight down into the narrow, rocky canyon carved through layers of volcanic ash. The colorful rock walls and deep canyon make this a short but dramatic stop.
Take a short hike on the Hot Springs Canyon Trail to reach Big Bend’s historic hot springs. You’ll find ruins of an old resort and a natural hot spring pool right beside the Rio Grande. Soak in the warm water, surrounded by canyon walls and river views, it’s one of the most relaxing spots in the park.
The Chisos Mountains are the heart of Big Bend. These high desert mountains have cooler air, shady forests, and amazing views. You can drive scenic roads or take hiking trails through canyons, forests, and ridges. It’s also the only mountain range completely inside a U.S. national park and home to plants and animals found nowhere else.
Sotol Vista Overlook offers one of the best views in Big Bend. From here, you can see the wide stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert and the distant Chisos Mountains. The overlook is named after the hardy sotol plants that dot the hillsides. It’s a perfect photo stop and a great place to take in the vast desert landscape.
At Mule Ears Viewpoint, you’ll see two sharp rock peaks that look just like a mule’s ears! These landmark formations rise above the desert and make a great photo backdrop. The view also shows off how wind and water have shaped Big Bend over time.
The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is a great place to start your Big Bend visit. Here, you’ll see real fossils of ancient creatures, like dinosaurs, that once lived in this area. Learn how these fossils were preserved and what they tell us about Big Bend’s past. It’s a fun and educational stop for all ages.
