We’ve partnered with The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona to bring you this one-of-a-kind experience, guided by authentic stories and expert knowledge.
This driving tour covers the section of Route 66 from Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona to Arrowhead Junction just across the California state line. That’s a distance of over 300 miles, which means the drive can take at least five hours. While it’s possible to drive this whole route in one day, you might want to plan for at least two days to make sure you have enough time to stop and explore some of the attractions along the way.
On the drive, you’ll listen to fascinating stories and hear useful tips for getting the most out of your road trip. We’ll tell you all about the history of this highway, from the earliest days of rugged travelers to the persistence of Route 66 in our national mythos.
We’ll pass through historic towns like Flagstaff and get a taste of the Old West. And we’ll see plenty of Arizona’s famous desert scenery, from windswept vistas to huge caverns and canyons. And don’t forget to grab a Route 66 Passport and stamp it at different landmarks along the way for a permanent record of your journey!
Westbound (from Gallup, NM): Start near Petrified Forest National Park.
Eastbound (from Los Angeles, CA): Start just before the CA-AZ border near Topock on I-40.
From Las Vegas, NV: Start on US-93 South near Dolan Springs.
Plan 2 days for highlights or 3–4 days to fully explore Arizona’s Route 66.

For Arizona’s stretch of Route 66, plan at least 2 full days with an overnight stay to enjoy the highlights without rushing. For a richer experience with time to explore towns and attractions, 3 to 4 days is ideal.
