Oahu’s South Shore has so much to explore, and this free audio tour makes sure you don’t miss a thing. Dominated by extinct volcanoes, sandy beaches, iconic landmarks and family-friendly hikes, the southern coastline is the perfect day trip right from the heart of Waikiki.
This drive has a little of everything. Hike up the rim of an extinct volcano at Diamond Head (reservations required) for amazing panoramic views, and marvel at the Halona Blowhole shooting water 20 feet into the air. Snorkel with colorful fish at Oahu’s best reef, Hanauma Bay (reservations required), and see the historic Makapuu Point Lighthouse – either from the parking lot or up close on an easy hike. We’ll also suggest stops at some of our favorite beaches and viewpoints along the drive.
Throughout the tour you’ll hear turn-by-turn directions, parking guidance, and travel tips, as you drive alongside sandy beaches with fun waves and at the foot of steep cliffs – that are 1,000 feet tall or more. After Makapuu Point Lighthouse the tour returns to Waikiki, while sharing fascinating stories about Oahu’s history and culture.
After the lighthouse, you can also continue on a loop drive past two of Oahu’s best beaches and the famous Pali Lookout on the full island tour of Oahu. This is the best option for exploring the whole island and includes routes for the Island Circle, Pearl Harbor, and the North Shore.

Waikiki is known for its iconic beachfront lined with golden sand, gentle waves, and stunning views of Diamond Head. It’s the heart of Oahu’s resort scene – famous for surfing, vibrant nightlife, and classic Hawaiian beach culture.
Hanauma Bay is renowned for having one of Oahu’s best coral reefs. This protected marine preserve is a top spot for snorkeling, where visitors can swim alongside colorful tropical fish in calm, crystal-clear waters.
The best months to visit are April-June and September-October. During these shoulder seasons, you’ll enjoy warm beach weather, fewer crowds, and better availability for popular reservations like Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay.
While Waikiki is lively year-round, these months offer the perfect balance of sunshine, ocean conditions, and a more relaxed island experience.
