What to Expect

Salzburg, Austria is one of Europe’s most stunning cities. From Sound of Music scenery to the iconic Do-Re-Mi steps, and princely palaces to historic abbeys, explore everything this centuries-old city has to offer.

This walking tour explores both historic Salzburg and Maria’s Salzburg. Visit scenery and filming locations from the classic musical, including the dazzling Mirabell Gardens, historic Nonnberg Abbey, beautiful Saint Peter’s Church, and plenty of fountains and public plazas featured in the movie. Discover the story of the real Von Trapp family too.

Along the way, explore Salzburg’s historic highlights. Enjoy the sprawling Haus de Natur, a sprawling natural history museum with three floors and an interactive science exhibit. Enter the imposing Fortress Hohensalzburg, where nearly 1,000 years of history reside. And stroll through the city center, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its beautifully preserved Baroque architecture.

Pick up a souvenir or a bite to eat in the Altermarkt and the Grünmarkt. Learn about Salzburg’s favorite son at Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s childhood home. Lastly, see the hotel where many of the actors from The Sound of Music stayed while the film was being shot and end up nearly back to the start.

This Salzburg stroll has something for everyone.

Suggested Start Location

The tour’s starting point is directly in front of Mirabell Palace, opposite Andräkirche Salzburg. The commentary will begin playing once you are standing in front of the palace entrance. Be sure to check the Map & Highlights tab to make sure you are in the right place. Unlike a driving tour, this tour is designed to start only from the designated starting point.

How Much Time Do I Need?

It is possible to see the major highlights of the route in half a day, but add more time for visits to the Fortress Hohensalzburg, the Haus der Natur, and the Mozart’s Birthplace.

One day is enough to see all the Sound of Music sites, and two days should be sufficient to visit the city’s other big attractions as well.

Walking Distance

The walking distance of the tour is 3+ miles.
