What to Expect

Discover the Ring of Kerry, one of Ireland’s most famous drives. This 125-mile route circles the Iveragh Peninsula, passing rugged coastline, lush hills, historic castles, and some of the country’s most memorable views.

Marvel at the stunning Kerry Cliffs, discover the history of Ross Castle, meander through the Gap of Dunloe, or explore the ancient stone fort at Staigue. Along the way, you’ll travel through picturesque towns like Kenmare and Sneem, enjoy isolated beach hideaways, discover crumbling castles, and enjoy sweeping views toward the remote island of Skellig Michael.

Looping between Killarney and Portmagee, this route reveals layers of Irish history, from ancient settlements to the events that helped shape modern Ireland. The stories follow the road too. Through our audio tour, hear about medieval clans, whiskey smugglers, and Ireland’s fight for independence. Explore clockwise or counter-clockwise, with full commentary in either direction.

Suggested Start Location

From Cork: Begin the tour on the N22 and drive westbound toward Killarney.

From Mallow: Begin the tour on the N72 and drive westbound toward Killarney.

From Tralee / Kerry Airport: Begin the tour on the N22 and drive southbound toward Killarney.

Suggested Time

We could drive the Ring of Kerry in about a day, but it will be a long day. Adding a second day, ideally with an overnight stay near the Kerry Cliffs, gives you time to enjoy your visit.

FAQ

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE RING OF KERRY?

The best way to explore the Ring of Kerry is to follow the scenic loop at your own pace. Start early, take the worthwhile detours, and stop often to enjoy the dramatic coastal views, historic sites, and charming villages. If time allows, spend two days to make the most of the journey.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT RING OF KERRY?

Late spring (April to June) and early fall (September) offer the best balance of mild weather, long daylight hours, and fewer crowds. Summer is beautiful too, but expect busier roads and attractions.
