Discover one of Alaska’s most scenic road trips between Anchorage and Denali National Park. As you travel 235 miles through the heart of Southcentral Alaska, you’ll pass mountain ranges, glaciers, rivers, historic communities, and vast wilderness that show why it’s known as the Last Frontier.
Along the way, explore mountainous Chugach State Park, take in views of Knik Glacier, stop in the Denali gateway town of Talkeetna, and see the colorful spirit houses in Eklutna Village. There’s also plenty to enjoy along the drive, from short hikes and wildlife viewing to flightseeing and scenic viewpoints.
Throughout the drive, you’ll hear stories about Alaska Native traditions, Russian exploration, gold rush history, homesteading, and sled dog racing. Commentary guides you all the way to the Denali National Park entrance area, where the audio tour concludes. From there, travel farther into the park by shuttle or tour bus.
From Anchorage: The tour begins on E 5th Ave (AK-1), north of Anchorage. Head east on AK-1 towards Denali.
From Denali: The tour begins on the Parks Highway (AK-3), just north of the Denali National Park Airport. Head south on AK-3 towards Anchorage.
A single day covers the route’s highlights, but two days gives you time to enjoy the best hikes, parks, and scenic stops between Anchorage and Denali.
