Using Lake Charles as the starting area, the Creole Nature Trail is a scenic byway drive that is designated as an All-American Road. In southwestern Louisiana, the trail provides visitors with an interesting exploration of the region’s diverse natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Though it can look flat and almost feature-less, it’s a place with incredible ecological diversity.
We’ll make our way through wetlands, marshes, and prairies and even find ourselves on Gulf Coast beaches. We’ll have many oopportunies to spot wildlife, yes, including alligators. Pelicans and herons abound, but more dedicated observers will find a paradise to watch migratory birds and native species in their natural habitats. Come at different times of year and see different birdlife occupying the wetlands.
One of the highlights of the Creole Nature Trail is to visit the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge features expansive wetlands and provides easy-access viewing platforms for spotting wildlife. We’ll also have other relatively short hiking opportunities at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, with favorites being the Blue Goose Trail and the Sabine Wetland Trail. None of these are especially long or strenuous – and none have any significant elevation gain!
In addition to its natural wonders, the Creole Nature Trail also delves into the rich cultural heritage of the region. If our timing is lucky, we’ll be able to experience some Creole culture through local cuisine, music and festivals. The trail’s route passes through small towns and communities where traditional Cajun and Creole cultures are preserved and celebrated. And as we go you’ll hear a whole collection of stories about this truly fascinating and unique cultural mix – and that means really favorful eating too!
