What to Expect

Muir Woods National Monument protects one of the oldest stands of redwood trees. We’ll hear how conservationists fought to protect the trees – and turned this into one of the very first National Monuments – on this scenic walking tour.

Just 15 miles from San Francisco and next door to Mount Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods is approachable via CA Route 1. As we drive, we’ll hear the backstory behind this ancient forest, along with the complex web of life sustained here. Then, driving down the steep and winding road into Redwood Canyon will lead us directly to the Visitor Center. From there, we’ll take the easy, two-mile path through the redwoods, visiting favorite groves and hearing how the Redwood creek nourishes it all, before finishing up back at the Visitor Center.

Suggested Start Location

The walking tour commentary actually begins on the drive in to the National Monument — as you approach from either the north or south on Route 101.

Or begin at 256 CA-1, Mill Valley, CA 94941. From there, the commentary will direct you to drive down to the Muir Woods Visitor Center, then you will continue on foot along the Main Trail inside the park.
