What to Expect

Nothing says “summer” quite like Cape Cod. Drive the iconic “bent arm” between Barnstable and Provincetown, with side trips to red-and-white-striped lighthouses, sandy beaches, and historic Pilgrim landmarks.

Along this 60-mile route down Route 6, we’ll detour to discover everything from quaint coastal towns, fields of pale lavender, cranberry bogs, and gorgeous salt marsh hikes through protected landscapes. As we drive to Marconi Station, First Encounter Beach, and Pilgrim’s Landing, we’ll uncover the hidden histories and unique characters who shaped the early days of this sandy peninsula. We may even choose to linger longer at Bank Street Beach or the Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary.

Above all, we won’t miss the highlights of this quintessential New England roadtrip: Nauset Light, which once guided ships past the treacherous Atlantic shores and whose stripes are synonymous with “the Cape”; towering Pilgrim Monument, with its gorgeous seashore views; and the thrilling Provincetown Causeway, a literal rock bridge crossing the water, buffeted by ocean waves.

The tour can be driven in either direction, starting in either Barnstable or Provincetown.

Suggested Start Location

From Barnstable: Start the tour on US-6 East from West Barnstable.
From Provincetown: Start near Ptown Harbor on Commercial Street in Provincetown.

Suggested Time

This full-day driving tour covers about 60 miles with detours to beaches, lighthouses, and interesting spots along the way. Set aside plenty of extra time for salt marsh hikes, beach walks, and the fun-but-rocky causeway at the very tip of Provincetown.
